Activities and Projects

MTI is currently coordinating two-year research programs for MoDOT in the areas of Geotechnics and Structures.  This includes the development and implementation of new materials, monitoring techniques, designs, and applications.  MTI is also engaged in alternative fuels research, specifically in the areas of plug-in electric vehicles and the development of a future hydrogen infrastructure.

MTI/MoDOT Collaborative Structural Research Program

MoDOT and the University of Missouri (UM) Structures faculty will collaborate to conduct research on transportation structures, addressing national and state needs with a twenty-two month program of six projects.

Structural Program Theme Areas:
1. Extending service life of MoDOT’s existing bridges
2. Optimizing MoDOT’s bridge design and construction for effective cost reduction

MTI/MoDOT Transportation Geotechnicals Research Program
MoDOT and the University of Missouri (UM) geotechnical faculty will collaborate to develop improved, technically sound specifications based on LRFD concepts, maintaining adequate safety and performance of state transportation facilities while minimizing costs.

Geotechnical Program Task Areas:
1. Site characterization for lowest cost transportation products
2. Bridge foundation design assessment
3. Establishing acceptable risk
4. Producing new LRFD design specifications
